Impacts of Wofagric and Gold in the Soil Awards

Amina Gbana is a mixed crop farmer. She resides in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region. She grows maize, groundnut and soyabeans, on a 20-acre farmland.

When we featured Alice in the Gold in the Soil Awards Documentary, she highlighted the integral role of community and value chain actors, like input dealers in her business.

“Some input dealers support me. I pay them back with some of my produce. I get support from my community. They have supported me with a piece of land. So during harvest, I give the community some of my crops,” she said.

Committed and hardworking Alice Vinyogibi made it into our Gold in the Soil Awards Documentary in 2021. Alice is a poultry farmer, lives in the Kaleo Nadowli District of the Upper West Region. Alice reiterated the importance of family support in running a successful poultry farm:

“I have invested over 120, 000 ghc into the poultry business. I have been able to do so because of the support of my mother and my loving husband,” she said. While it is encouraging, Alice added that sustainable government support for the sector will go a longer way to make more impact.

In 2021, we featured Zakia Mashud in the Gold in the Soil Documentary. Zakia lives in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region. Zakia has this to say about the impacts of farming,

“I farm groundnut 5 acres, maize 5 acres and soyabeans 5 acres, and it has been very helpful. I pay my children’s school fees, feed from the farm, buy cloths, and store some for the next season.”
